NBC's Revolution is expanding its ranks for season two.

The Royal Pains alum Patrick Heusinger has been tapped for a recurring guest star role on the returning drama, The Hollywood Reporter has learned. The actor will play Adam, a 30-something, physically fit handsome/roguish man who's cool, has a good sense of humor and lives life to its fullest.

Also, Revolution is bringing the romance in Season 2, signing Jessica Collins for a four-episode arc as mysterious new addition Cynthia. Revolution' showrunner Eric Kripke has this to say about the character: "Cynthia is a beautiful young woman of deep faith, whose winning humor and blazing intelligence capture the heart of one of 'Revolution's' leading characters." While that could mean anyone from Miles (presumably still grieving Nora and wrestling with his feelings for Rachel) to Neville (still married) to Monroe (single, but psycho), we're wondering if maybe it's Aaron's turn for a little romantic distraction? Unless he's destined to reunite with his wife?

Heusinger most recently co-starred on Fox's failed drama pilot Boomerang as the son of Felicity Huffman. His credits also include Gossip Girl, Black Swan and NBC's busted pilot Beautiful People. Collins was a regular on AMC's "Rubicon" and ABC's "The Nine," which both lasted just a single season. She also had a supporting role in the Oscar nominated hit drama "Zero Dark Thirty."
NBC’s Revolution only ended its first season last Monday, and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has wasted no time announcing the hit show’s Season 1 Blu-ray and DVD set. While we already know we’ll be getting a Blu-ray jam-packed with more than 90 minutes of bonus features, fans of the series or those waiting to catch up will still have a while to wait to purchase the series on Blu-ray and DVD. Revolution: The Complete First Season will be released on September 3.

Because NBC opted to put the program on hiatus for several months in order to air it after new episodes of The Voice, it ended up feeling like we got an extended season of the series filled with betrayals, fights, and several deaths. Revolution doesn’t cut back in terms of action, and it should be nice to revisit the episodes since some of them aired quite far apart—especially since we now know NBC’s drama will officially be returning to the schedule for a second season.

Additionally, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment is promising over 90 minutes of bonus features with the set. Blu-ray and DVD sets will come with most of the same features, including the webisodes NBC produced to keep interest in the series strong during its hiatus. If you are looking for interviews with the cast and crew, the Blu-ray may be a better option, since footage from the Paley Fest panel will be available. You can pre-order the set over at Amazon or check out the extras, below.

Episode Review
by SpoilerTV

This week’s season finale of Revolution, “The Dark Tower,” was directed by Charles Beeson. I have to admit, I either missed it, or there was no screen credit for a writer for the episode, but it sure felt like an Eric Kripke penned finale (FYI? The story was by Kripke with Paul Grellong getting a co-writing credit for the teleplay). We begin with a classic rock montage from the season – just as every Supernatural (Kripke’s previous show) finale does. The overlay of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home” helped to drive that theme home for the audience. The song was for a time a bit of an anthem on Supernatural. The song’s basic premise and melancholy tone suit Revolution, especially this episode. This episode tied up a lot of season one and opened a lot of doors going into season two.

I want to first comment on some truly powerful performances in this episode. Billy Burke delivered his best performance to date on the series. David Lyons and Giancarlo Esposito have been impressive all season, so it would be easy to simply take their performances for granted, except that’s impossible. Tracy Spiridakos and Daniella Alonso are likewise magnificent in the episode, delivering a season’s best for Spiridakos, and sadly, a series best for Alonso. Finally, Colm Feore also delivers a series best though he has little screen time, and Zac Orth once again makes Aaron the character you most want to bring home with you. It’s simply staggering to realize that I’ve named almost the entire cast here. And that’s not to negate the other performances, these simply deserved a special mention.

For me, this was an action-packed episode that still managed to hit some satisfying emotional climaxes. The theme of family was carried throughout the episode. Both Jason (JD Pardo) and Charlie (Spiridakos) find their parents wanting. Rachel (Elizabeth Mitchell) being driven by revenge for Danny even when her living daughter begs her to stop, shows how destructive revenge can be. I felt this nicely paralleled the similar storyline in Supernatural when John sacrifices his relationship with his living sons in order to devote his entire life to exacting revenge for his wife’s death. It’s also a great scene for Spiridakos, in which Charlie really does come into her own.

For his own part, Neville (Esposito) is obsessed with killing Rachel. Neville manages to convince Jason to back him up and have his back, but for once, the audience clearly sees that he is as ruthless and untrustworthy as ever when he kills Franklin (Ramon Fernandez) after telling him he’d let him go and then makes it look like Franklin tried to kill him. Jason tells his father that he wants Charlie and her mother taken alive, and is once again disappointed to learn his father was not going to listen to him.

It’s always a joy to watch the many faces of Giancarlo Esposito at work, but his best scene is when Neville finally has Monroe in his power. It’s a great piece of writing too. The scene harkens back to Neville’s backstory from before the blackout when he was a browbeaten insurance salesman. He towers over the captured Monroe and tells him exactly what’s been wrong with his performance – and he’s not wrong, Monroe has been “deranged.” Most tellingly, the first thing he says is “there’s been a change in management,” making the obvious connection to his corporate job before the blackout. He points out to Monroe that they have different leadership styles: “You frighten. I inspire.” This is a common management technique that continues the analogy to a corporate culture. Neville also points out that Monroe has “an erotic fixation” on Miles. This is also a shout out to Supernatural as the brothers have been told by one of their enemies that they are “erotically co-dependent.” It’s a nice parallel to reinforce the brotherly bond between Miles and Monroe.

The most powerful scene, for me, was Miles finally confessing to Monroe that they would always be brothers whether he wanted that to be the case or not. The devastation that that remark brought to both characters’ faces was a really powerful moment. Burke and Lyons do have undeniable chemistry on screen. While their continued face offs have been a bit ridiculous, including Monroe continuing to come out of nowhere and attack Monroe, the climax of this face off negated the silliness. It’s a great moment when it only takes the flick of an eye to warn Monroe that the tower people are coming for them, for Monroe to shift back into having Miles’ back. It’s another great moment when Miles finally tells Monroe that he’s asking the wrong question. He needs to ask why Miles couldn’t kill him. We do finally get to see what lead to that. It’s a credit to both actors that we see both sides of the argument. After Monroe has the rebel and his wife and children killed to make an example of them, Miles and Nora are clearly appalled at how far Monroe has gone. Monroe, however, is clearly terrified of losing Miles. We’ve seen all season the lengths to which desperate people will go to save and protect their family, and perhaps, in that context, it’s not so hard to feel some empathy for Monroe, who we know has lost his entire biological family too. In the end, Miles saves Monroe from Neville and tells him, “Run Bass.” The last shot we have in the episode of Monroe looking back during the violent thunderstorm is a beautiful shot. It also emphasizes the storm that turning the power off had unleashed in Monroe.

During the flashback, we see Nora react to the discovery of the Rebels. As it was a bomb that went off in the bar, even though Miles was almost killed, I had to wonder if Nora was already involved in some way with the rebels given her reaction. She clearly recognized the group and given her explosive expertise, one has to speculate. Nora is, at least, given a hero’s death in the episode. She sacrifices herself by throwing herself in the line of fire to protect the others from the Tower people, but she also convinces Aaron to go with Rachel guilt-free rather than saving her. Even before this, it’s clear that she is going to sacrifice herself for Miles happiness when she tells Rachel that Miles loves her. I was really relieved that Miles stayed with Nora and tried to save her even after she tried to make him go to Rachel. I hope that Nora is wrong, and that the show doesn’t push for a Miles/Rachel storyline. I was very much sad to see Nora go. She was a strong capable woman, and those are still a relatively rare breed on television.

Aaron finally gets to have his moment as he's the one to turn the power on. We learn that Ben may have actively been seeking him out, in fact. Orth is able to infuse his performance with a lot of the comic relief without resulting in Aaron simply being either a joke or a caricature. Hopefully, the writers will continue to do justice to the character.

The cliffhanger of the season, is the aftermath to turning on the power. We are left with the death of Randall after he’s launched the missiles. I will very much miss Feore. Of course, it’s unclear if the missiles will actually hit their target or explode when they do. I didn’t think it completely logical for Randall to kill himself. After all he does seem to have set in motion the return of the President who one would assume would be grateful to him. Meanwhile, Miles, Charlie, Aaron and Rachel are still trapped by Neville on level 12. In the end, it seemed ridiculously easy for everyone to end up on level 12. Finally, the actual fate of the Georgia army and the cities that bombs are supposed to hit are left in the air. Our final shot of Monroe is him getting away in a violent thunderstorm, which we are left to assume is a by-product of turning on the power. The Tower people seem to have been effectively neutralized. I was disappointed that Glenn Morshower (Dan) didn’t have more to do – but then, we haven’t seen his body, so who knows?

What did you think of the season finale? I thought it did a really good job of closing off much of the first season mystery while opening up lots of possibilities for season two. I will say that I thought having the President still alive and hiding in Cuba was a little on the nose. It was recently revealed that Ben Edlund and Rockne O’Bannon will both be coming on board for season two, and both have strong personalities that should serve to shape season two. Let me know your thought and feelings about the finale in the comments below.

Review of Episode 19: "Children of Men"

by SpoilerTV

This week’s episode of Revolution, “Children of Men,” was written by David Rambo and Jim Barnes and directed by Frederick E. O. Toye. This is the second last episode of the season and things are starting to build to a climax. This episode featured some great lines and action sequences. We also see the world of Revolution expand a bit more through the introduction of some new characters.

This episode felt a bit stronger than some of the recent episodes and had a few really great moments for me. Miles’ (Billy Burke) declaration that it was “Just another Monday” is a typical Kripke shout out to the fact that the show airs on Mondays. My favorite exchange of dialogue was Neville (Giancarlo Esposito) calling Aaron (Zak Orth) “Chubs” and Aaron responding by calling Neville a “Dick.” The blood explosions in the fight in the Tower are a Kripke signature. I also loved the Star Wars: Return of the Jedi shout out as Aaron and company are trying to break into the Tower under a hail of enemy fire. Watching Dr Warren’s book burn, which is also reflected in Aaron’s glasses is a wonderful visual echo of Grace’s (Maria Howell) revelation that turning the power on could result in setting the world on fire and a powerful image to end the episode wit.

Rachel (Elizabeth Mitchell) once again fails to kill Monroe (David Lyons). The scene with her pulling the pin on the grenade and then letting the soldier wrestle it away from her was bordering on the ridiculous. The show redeemed itself somewhat through Monroe’s insight that she didn’t really want to commit suicide even if she did want him dead. This does make sense. Rachel is a fighter – she’s been fighting for her kids since Danny was born after all. I’ll admit to rolling my eyes when Monroe started confessing to Rachel that he’d just learned he had a son, so now he understood her anger over Danny’s death. Mitchell does a credible job conveying Rachel’s reluctant sympathy for him. In fact, both Mitchell and Lyons deliver powerful performances in the scene. The flashback to Rachel and Ben (Tim Guinee) after the blackout and the parallel of Monroe’s and Rachel’s comments on needing redemption for the blood on their hands – especially from their children is very effective. We see Rachel at her weakest in the flashback and Ben using the children to give her strength – the very thing she is continuing to draw strength from. It’s hard to believe, however, that after years of ruthlessness, Monroe is suddenly going to have a change of heart and overcome his paranoia for a son he’s never seen. Rachel puts Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos) ahead of Miles (Billy Burke) when she gives Monroe the gun and trusts him to help save Charlie. He does save Charlie even if Rachel immediately gets Charlie and Aaron captured.
Giancarlo Epsosito delivers yet another great performance. Neville keeps his cool even through getting captured and manipulates the dynamic of fear and suspicion that is festering in the Monroe militia. It’s surprising when Jason (J.D. Pardo) jumps in to support Neville’s bid to win Riley’s (Omid Abtahi) trust. I’d be surprised if Jason is really interested in taking over the Monroe militia, but I’d also be surprised if Neville isn’t going to make a legitimate bid to become the head of the Militia and usurp Monroe’s power if he can. It’s likely that Franklin’s (Ramon Fernandez) grasp on command is weak due to his quick promotion and general distrust of Monroe’s irratic behavior. The question is whether either of them still feels any loyalty to Miles and the Rebels.

The other great villain, Randall Flynn’s (Colm Feore) fate is uncertain. I’ll be really disappointed if they’ve killed off Feore. Feore is a delight to watch as he reacts to Rachel’s gaining access to the Tower when he couldn’t. Randall, of course, knew Rachel before the blackout, which is telling as he says to her, “You never had much self-preservation.” The flashback with Ben and the discussion with Monroe demonstrate that her self-preservation is all about protecting her children – something Randall doesn’t understand. Randall did know about a stairwell at the end of the hall on Level 11, so I’m hoping he made it to the stairwell.

Miles and Nora (Daniella Alonso) have relatively little to do in this episode. We do get to see Nora bring out her mad knife skills again, and once more save Miles’ life. I was once more rolling my eyes as we are left with yet another standoff between Miles and Monroe, however. Upcoming promotional photos would suggest that neither of them is about to pay the price but will leave collateral damage in their wake yet again. With both Miles and Monroe having major plot lines revolving around them, it’s hard to feel a sense of impending doom for either of them which serves to lessen the tension for me.

The last scene of the episode is one of the most powerful. We finally discover who has been using those electromagnetic coil guns to essentially explode people. It was great to see Glenn Morshower join the cast as Dan. His screen credits are too numerous to list, but my favorite roles of his include runs on 24 and The West Wing. Rachel recognizes him immediately, and it quickly becomes clear that the only reason they are still alive is because of Rachel. The flashbacks tell us that Randall had planned a “launch” of some kind and there was some kind of resistance planned for it as Ben and Rachel fight about the pendant. We also see in the flashbacks that Rachel and Ben had been having some difficulties in their relationship. Randall tells Monroe that the Tower is the crown jewel of the US military. In the fifteen years since the blackout, the people in the Tower have dedicated their lives to protecting the Tower from anyone trying to use it because it is too powerful to be in anyone’s hands. Being sequestered and giving up just being able to enjoy the sun would have to make them zealots if they hadn’t started out that way. I suspect their very sacrifice is going to make it difficult for anyone to gain control over the power, even if all they want to do, like Aaron, is some good. The flashbacks and comments by both Dan and Grace indicate that shutting down the power actually saved lives.

Next week marks the season finale. I’m anticipating a fairly major cliffhanger – or two – as Kripke is known for them. He’s put a lot of balls in the air so far this season, but he’s also answered a lot of the questions that were asked at the beginning of the season. It will be interesting to see what Neville does once he has Monroe’s militia at his disposal – and how Monroe responds. Will Monroe join back up with Miles? Will he go looking for his son? What’s the likelihood of Miles and company abandoning their quest to turn the power back on? How likely is it that Dan and company will let them? Lots to look forward to in the upcoming episode. What do you think will happen in the season finale? Let me know in the comments below.Martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04680593163636654039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8936761927177970969.post-89227827337077150572013-05-23T20:31:00.000-03:002013-05-23T20:31:52.825-03:00Extras of Revolution talk about the time filming in Wilmington

WILMINGTON, NC (WECT) – Members of the "Monroe Militia" are powering down from their time in the spotlight.

With Revolution moving to Austin, Texas to film its second season, a small, close-knit group of extras that were cast to play militia members in Wilmington are reflecting on the times they spent on the show.

According to one of the militia members, David Pascua, the group has been dubbed 'Sgt. Sam's Militia of Background Artists', named for the production assistant in charge of the group, Samantha Marie Clark.

The group started working together on Episode 3.

Pascua said they filmed scenes at the former Sticky Fingers restaurant in Wilmington and Smith Creek Bridge in Castle Hayne.

"Over the five days of filming, a camaraderie was established and many us became friends," Pascua explained in an email to our Ashlea Kosikowski. "During that time, the weather was not only hot and humid, but basically unforgiving."

The group soon became brothers-in-arms, carpooling to the set or to auditions, helping eachother and hanging out when not working.

On Monday nights, the militia members gather at The Cellar in downtown Wilmington to watch Revolution together. Revolution stars Billy Burke and David Lyons have even stopped by to watch an episode or two with the group.

With two episodes left in the season, the group is preparing to say goodbye to seeing themselves on the show and to celebrate their time together.

They plan to meet for the final episode of the season at The Cellar on Monday, June 3rd at 10:00 p.m.

"We just want to celebrate our time as extras on Revolution and give the show, the production staff and actors a great big farewell sendoff to Texas," said Pascua.

While the group continues to work on other film and TV productions in and around Wilmington, Pascua said they will miss working on Revolution.
WILMINGTON, NC (WECT)- City leaders are disappointed but not surprised that Revolution is leaving Wilmington.

Giancarlo Esposito confirmed in a text message to our Frances Weller on Friday night that NBC is moving the hit series to Texas.

Councilman Kevin O'Grady said it seems the story line was moving them away from the Port City.

"They had always made allusions to Texas in the show, and I was thinking if they go to Texas, that it would be hard to imagine Texas here," he said. "We don't have that dry, arroyo type location. So, it's not a complete shock. We have lots of film work and other shows here now and there will be more coming."

NBC announced that Revolution would be picked up for the 2013-14 season a few weeks ago but did not indicate then if the show would be coming back to Wilmington.

O'Grady said he doesn't think the series leaving will have a negative impact on the local film industry.

"The film industry is still here to stay," he said. "We're sorry to see Revolution go. They've been good neighbors for the past year. They've created a lot of jobs for us. Many of the cast and crew lived in our neighborhood, so we will be sorry to see them go."

This could mark the first time in 16 years that Wilmington has not had a TV series filming here. Dawson's Creek filmed from 1997-2003. One Tree Hill picked up where that series left off in 2003 and ran through 2012. Revolution started filming in Wilmington in mid-2012, with much of the crew from OTH working on the show.

Johnny Griffin, director of the Wilmington Regional Film Commission, wasn't immediately available for comment.

However, Mayor Bill Saffo told us he and Griffin are currently working together to bring several new pilot shows to Wilmington to fill the space left by Revolution's departure.

When the show announced it was coming to Wilmington to film in May of last year, the news was met with a lot of excitement. There was huge fanfare around the premiere of the show when it debuted last fall and hosted a screening at Thalian Hall, with some of the stars attending the event.

Revolution employed around 125 people full time and hired on hundreds of part time extras. The stars of the show settled into the community, even getting involved in charitable organizations while here. Esposito, who plays Capt. Tom Neville, said in a recent interview with WECT that he hoped to have a chance to film again in Wilmington.

The series originally decided to film on location in Wilmington because of the experienced crew and the state's film incentives program.

In North Carolina, productions spending more than $250,000 are eligible for a 25% refundable tax credit and an accommodations tax exemption.

In Texas, productions are reimbursed up to 17.5% if they spend more than $250,000.

Productions can also get 8% to 29.25% back of eligible wages paid to Texas residents, depending on budget levels and types of productions.

According to a news release, Revolution is the season's top-rated drama on ABC, CBS, NBC and Fox in adults 18-49, as well as the top-rated new series among those networks.

Revolution airs Monday nights at 10:00 on WECT.

Episode Review: 1x18 "Clue"
by SpoilerTV

This week’s episode of Revolution, “Clue,” was written by Paul Grellong and Oanh Ly and directed by Helen Shaver. It’s one of the few episodes that hasn’t featured flashbacks. The core storyline was a nice murder mystery a la Agatha Christie’s Ten Little Indians – hence the importance of clues.

I thought the murder mystery was well done. Admittedly, I’m busy taking notes as I watch, but it really didn’t seem obvious to me. There were clues that could have implicated any of them. Jim (Malik Yoba) doesn’t really tip his hand even when Miles (Billy Burke) tells him to go to his wife. I’d have to go back to see if we have any indication that Jim was involved in the drone attack at the time. Of course, one of the failings of the show for me has been the lack of time we actually get to know the characters. The flashbacks for the main characters do help with that, but there have been numerous peripheral characters, like Jim and Jeremy (Mark Pellegrino) among others, who I would have liked to know a lot more about. It’s difficult to be able to really gauge some of the characters’ actions.

It was fantastic to see Daniella Alonso (Nora) really get to show off what she can do in this episode. Her portrayal of a soldier beaten, tortured, and drugged past her limits was fantastic. Nora was a great tribute to soldiers of any gender and her surrender was of a soldier who has finally passed the final limits – it didn’t make her less brave or weak. I also really liked the Raiders of the Lost Ark shout out when Monroe (David Lyons) sends her the white dress and then asks her to dinner. Unlike Marion Ravenwood, Nora has given up drinking, however. I’m really enjoying most of the women characters, but especially Nora. She returns and instead of resenting Miles for not finding her, she is filled with guilt for having broken and revealed their secrets. Yet, she isn’t paralyzed by the guilt, she’s simply eager to help make up for it. The scene in which she gets free and takes out one of the guards was a terrific fight scene for her. Having the drugs still in her system makes for another level of uncertainty in figuring out who the guilty party is, but it is stupid of Miles to let Nora go (and for Nora to want to go as she is really endangering the whole party by not being 100%).

I was disappointed that they killed Sanborn (Leland Orser). I think the character could have brought an interesting dynamic to the Rebel side, and I really like Orser as an actor. Here again was an underused actor, who we really didn’t know enough about to truly gauge whether he could have been a double agent. Certainly, there are enough holes in his escape story – is anyone that lucky? Had he really reached his limit with Monroe? Did he suspect that Flynn (Colm Feore) would now want him killed because he’d seemingly ratted Flynn out to Monroe? Lots of good questions that we’ll likely never know the answer too. It’s a bit ironic that Revolution actually suffers from too much plot, with the result being there are often lots of storylines that will never get explored.

Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos) once again lets down Jason (JD Pardo). Charlie is pretty quick to condemn Jason again. She immediately jumps to the conclusion that the guy Jason met in Atlanta is someone suspicious and Jason is doing something to undermine the rebels. Coming hot on the heels of him almost dying to save her, this seems really harsh on Charlie’s part. Neville (Giancarlo Esposito) somewhat gleefully jumps on the bandwagon of those ready to condemn the young man. However, and perhaps more surprisingly, both of them also try to stop Miles from killing Jason. In the end, Jason is the one to kill Jim to prevent him from killing Miles. Charlie is proven wrong and apologizes, but Jason doesn’t want to hear it. It’s hard to blame Jason, but I suspect he will forgive her before long as well.

Monroe finds out about the Tower from Nora, and is ready to kill Flynn (Colm Feore). Feore is brilliant, as usual, as Flynn pleads for his life, pointing out all the reasons Monroe needs him. It’s always a great moment to watch Feore and Lyons play against each other. Flynn promises that he can gain access to the Tower and that it can do much more than just turn the power back on. I loved the exchange when they got to the Tower: Monroe: “False advertising.” Flynn: “Don’t judge a book by its cover.” As I suggested months ago, the Tower does, indeed go down – ½ a mile – not up. When Flynn finally tries to break in, we see that there are a number of people waiting for him inside. It’s unclear who they are, but we can guess that that they are the ones who killed Grace’s (Maria Howell) guard. There was no Grace in sight, but here’s hoping we actually get to see her again and find out more about that character – though my hopes of that are waning.

We also see that Aaron (Zak Orth) and Rachel (Elizabeth Mitchell) have made it to the Tower. Once again, and somewhat disappointingly, Aaron is relegated to the damsel in distress and spends the episode looking concerned from a distance. Rachel gets to kick some ass as she chokes out a guard to take his uniform to sneak into Monroe’s encampment to kill him. Mitchell delivers another great performance, but I still find Rachel’s character to be very inconsistent. She seems manically desperate for revenge in this episode at the cost of all else. The episode ends with her popping the pin on a grenade in Monroe’s tent.

It seems unlikely she will succeed, but even if she does get herself killed (though the promotional photos for the next two episodes suggest that she is not the main character who dies), I’m not sure that I will miss Rachel because she has been so inconsistently portrayed – I’m tired of trying to decide whether she’s a good guy or a bad guy – though this would seem to prove she’s one of the “good” guys. I don’t believe Mitchell is responsible for the inconsistent portrayal. I think that responsibility falls at the feet of the writers. For all that we’ve spent almost an entire season with these characters now, I feel like I barely know them. I would again attribute that to having too much plot. We seem to be advancing the plot quickly with a lot of action and a large cast. There’s only so much time that can be spent on character development, and almost all of that has come through the flashbacks. We have a fairly clear idea about who Miles, Neville, Monroe, and Aaron are, somewhat less so Nora and Charlie.

What did you think of the episode? I enjoyed the ‘who done it’ of the stranded team, and I continue to enjoy the portrayal of strong women in the show. There were some good performances and some good action in this episode. If you’ve seen the promotional photos for the last two episodes, you may have some thoughts on where we seem to be going...

Revolution Review

by SpoilerTV

This week’s episode of Revolution, “The Longest Day,” was written by Anne Cofell Saunders and directed by Steve Boyum. Saunders and Boyum last collaborated on the mid-season return episode, “The Stand.” Interestingly, this episode sees the return of the device Rachel (Elizabeth Mitchell) removed from Danny (Graham Rogers) in that episode. This episode also features a significant firefight and the death of another moderately important character. Boyum does his usual outstanding job of helping his actors deliver emotional and nuanced performances. I did find that the characterizations felt uneven, however.

Nora (Daniella Alonso) wakes up after sleeping with Miles (Billy Burke), which she’s been trying to do for several episodes, only to be full of regret suddenly. She tells him she sees no future for them other than watching each other die and having made the connection with each other, this will only make the death that much harder. This doesn’t seem particularly consistent with Nora’s character up until this point. It’s possible to explain her seeming change of heart based on how the war is wearing her down, but we’ve seen no evidence of it. Her leading the militia away from Miles to allow him to look for Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos) feels like a suicide run – if I die first, I don’t have to watch you die. It was nice to see Alonso actually get something to do for a change.

As the episode begins, Tom Neville (Giancarlo Esposito) confronts Jason (JD Pardo) about leaving him for the Militia in the last episode. Jason refuses to answer so, Neville tells Jason to shoot him. Pardo and Esposito have some great scenes together in this episode. Jason trying to sacrifice himself so that Nora, Miles, and Tom can save Charlie is a great scene for Pardo, but Esposito once again has one of the most powerful scenes of the episode when he tells Jason that even the most evil person has a line they won’t cross, and his line is letting his only son die. Once again, even though we are supposed to hate Tom, you can’t help but feel sympathy for him and what he’s had to become to survive. He is clearly not the coward he was in the flashbacks to just before the blackout when in the present, he takes a bullet for Jason and barely flinches.

Charlie and Jason grow closer in this episode, helped along by his risking his life to save hers. I liked them bonding over the shared problematic relationships with their parents. Comparing Charlie/Rachel with Jason/Tom also draws a nice parallel between Rachel and Tom. Both have had to change, adapt, and do ruthless things in order to protect themselves and their families. When Charlie and Jason share a kiss at the end of the episode, Tom sees and does not appear to be particularly happy about the budding relationship.

I’m finding the uneven characterization of Rachel to be increasingly difficult to overlook. It’s easier to see the different facets of Tom’s character meshing due to his circumstances. The flashbacks in this episode show Rachel going to Miles in order to protect her family. We do see a very different side of both Miles and Rachel. Rachel is willing to sacrifice herself in order to save her family. Miles is a much different and more ruthless leader – Burke’s performance in contrasting what he’s willing to do to his family in the past and what he’s willing to do for his family in the present is excellent.

Mitchell’s performance doesn’t clearly seem to define Rachel. I’m still suspicious of her, particularly when she is musing that Ben obviously knew something about Aaron’s (Zak Orth) importance. She seems angry that Ben has kept something from her – that he kept Aaron close for all the years and of all the people he could have given the pendant to, he gave it to Aaron. Of course, it makes absolute sense that she not know everything if she was turning herself in to the Militia. Rachel seems much more sympathetic when she realizes that Aaron is not going to leave her. We finally get to see some of Aaron’s mad skills as he cannibalizes some ancient computer equipment to change the programming on nanotech that he’s never even seen before. Rachel explains that the capsule was what kept Danny alive and that you can re-program it to do almost anything. Some of the best effects to date on the show were Rachel’s leg being fixed. Rachel is ruthless in not helping the man who captures them save his son. Aaron is appalled because he thinks their purpose is to help people. Rachel tells him that all she wants is power so that she can kill the man who killed her son. After all that Aaron has done for her, it is chilling as she tells him that she will leave him without hesitation. Going forward is seems likely that Aaron may refuse to help Rachel if what she wants to do is clearly going to harm more people than it will help.

Meanwhile, David Lyons as Monroe continues to deliver a brilliant performance each week. It’s almost impossible not to feel some sympathy for him as he becomes increasingly isolated and paranoid. I was sad to see Mark Pellegrino’s character, Jeremy, killed as he is always a joy to watch. I was expecting it, of course, as Pellegrino has his own show starting in the fall. It was impossible to tell if he was sincere or not in denying having anything to do with the assassination attempt and the play between Pellegrino and Lyons really made those scenes resonate. It is possible that Jeremy isn’t dead as the gunshot took place off camera – and the age-old rule is no body/ no death – but it seems likely he is dead. Lyons plays the scene perfectly as his eyes fill with tears as he learns he’s just killed his last friend. It doesn’t bode well for Nora who lands at his feet at the end of the episode. Sebastian may have just been tipped completely over into madness.

The episode does examine what we are willing to do for family through the multiple storylines. Monroe has lost all of his “family.” Rachel has become more ruthless to protect/avenge her family. Neville only finds the good that is left in him for his son. Miles has found his way back to his humanity through his family.

The episode ends with Nora captured and President Foster (Leslie Hope) telling Miles that if he can’t pull a miracle out of his hat, she is going to surrender to save as many people as she can. Do you think Miles can persuade her not to surrender? Miles and Neville will both be in big trouble if she does – or they will have to escape to another part of the country. During my freshman year at MIT, most of the guys in my dorm would stay up insanely late trying to think up an idea that would change the world. Unfortunately, this pursuit usually just turned into betting someone to do something stupid. Case in point, I remember one night I bet my friend Gary 50 bucks that he couldn't down three flaming vodka shots in under a minute. He gladly accepted the challenge and we set them ablaze. However, as we were stupid college freshmen, we didn't know that you have to blow out the flame before drinking and sadly, Gary didn't realize this until it was too late. Terrified, he spit the vodka out - momentarily resembling a screaming dragon - and lit the common room ping-pong table on fire. Luckily, someone else grabbed a fire extinguisher while I hid in the corner laughing, fairly certain I had just witnessed the best fire story of my life.

I was wrong. Yesterday, I saw two men spontaneously combust in front of me. Apparently the nanites that are constantly absorbing the flow of electricity are also able to expel it on command, turning our would-be rapists into Kentucky-fried Militia. Sorry, Gary. Dr. Warren wins. But what has really boggled my mind since witnessing this event is - the Blackout is potentially the LEAST amazing thing these little machines can do.

I mean if these things are everywhere - and I mean EVERYWHERE - the possibilities are limitless. Medically, we could wipe out sickness and disease. Ischemic heart disease? Nanites could clear your arteries in a day. HIV? Who needs white blood cells when you've got little robots fighting infection for you? And cancer? Well, it wouldn't stand a chance against machines that eat tumors for breakfast.

As a weapon - I have a feeling Private Burns and Private Ash were just the tip of the iceberg. My friends are back east, wandering the countryside, searching for a nuclear weapon - and I've found something that makes it look like a blowgun. Warheads are useless when you have the potential to neutralize irradiated uranium anywhere on the planet.

But even with all the ungodly scary ideas bouncing through my head at the moment, there's a potential for miracles. In agriculture, we could purify contaminated water, replenish dead soil and breakdown waste - almost instantly. By changing things at the atomic level, we could literally turn charcoal into diamonds - or make better, brand new materials. Hell, if we want to get crazy, we could give ourselves new abilities. Imagine nanites oxygenating your blood, practically allowing you to breathe underwater. We could reinforce our skin to live in more aggressive climates. We could change our eyes to see at night. And... I'm just getting started.

Since the Blackout, I've dreamed of a day when the lights would come back on. But if these things are what I think they are, this quest isn't just about putting things back the way they were - it's about finding a way to make the world better than it ever was before.Martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04680593163636654039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8936761927177970969.post-9271203402824783652013-05-07T17:51:00.001-03:002013-05-07T17:51:25.021-03:00Episode 17 "The Longest Day" TV PromoMartinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04680593163636654039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8936761927177970969.post-83947157627915267252013-05-07T17:30:00.000-03:002013-05-07T17:30:15.953-03:00Revolution Ratings Rises

Revolution "The Love Boat" Review

by SpoilerTV

Tonight’s episode of Revolution, “The Love Boat,” written by Melissa Glenn and directed by Charles Beeson, features a classic seventies throw back title from Kripke to the classic television show about a cruise ship that brought couples together. While the episode only brought one couple together in that way – Miles (Billy Burke) and Nora (Daniella Alonso) – love did figure prominently in the plot. I thought tonight’s episode was the strongest one we’ve had in a few episodes, but I also found myself wondering if the pacing has felt a little off because the story arc of the series is a bit skewed from most other television series which are in their final weeks of their seasons. Revolution has four more episodes compared to only one or two, so those series are coming to a climax in their major story arcs while Revolution is just beginning to ramp up to the end.

Neville (Giancarlo Esposito) reports to the headquarters of the Rebel-Georgia alliance, and Miles is less than happy to see him. In fact, nobody is happy to see him, not even his own son, and Nora and Charlie (Tracy Spiridakos) join Miles in wanting to kill Neville. Esposito is his usual joy to watch as Neville faces off with each of the rebels. Neville is completely full of himself when he arrives in Miles’ office, but by the end of the episode, in a nicely mirrored scene, Miles has the upper hand again, and he tells Neville that Foster is more interested in wins than Neville’s hurt pride. Of course, nothing is going to make Neville more dangerous than depriving him of his pride.

As the episode opens, Miles is drinking fairly heavily and this continues to be a theme throughout the episode. At one point, Neville passes him a flask, which Miles hesitates to take but inevitably does. It made me wonder if Miles had a drinking problem while leading the Militia and Neville knows this is a weakness he can exploit. Miles is clearly not happy about what he is being forced to do. Charlie watches the toll it is taking on Miles as he has one of his former Militia men executed at the outset of the episode. Miles also acts with Neville to bully Dr. Camp (Timothy Busfield) and kidnap his family.

Charlie, Jason (JD Pardo), and Nora are the champions of family in this episode and are determined to reunite Dr Camp with his family. In a terrific scene, Charlie asks Miles how it’s different to hold Dr. Camp and force him to work for the Republic by threatening his family than what Monroe (David Lyons) did to her mother. Miles justifies himself by saying it’s war. Charlie says she knows what war is and she’s willing to do a lot, but not this. Miles doesn’t deny that the scenarios aren’t different, and he points out to Charlie that he ran away from the Militia to stop being “this guy.” But Miles most importantly tells Charlie that Monroe is coming for him, and he’s obviously feeling guilty about the damage that has already been done to their family.

In contrast, Neville’s reunion with his son is not really about a loving family. Neville does reach out to offer Jason a truce. Jason knows his father too well, however, and tells him that he knows Neville doesn’t care which side he’s on as long as they are kissing his ass – something Jason clearly refuses to do anymore. Unfortunately, Neville also knows his son and knows his son’s weakness. Neville tells Jason that the only reason he’s with Georgia is because Jason was a traitor. He goes on to tell Jason that his mother almost died in the escape. Jason's weakness, that Neville is more than will to exploit, is that Jason does love his mother. Pardo does an excellent job holding his own in the glaring, intense looks between himself and Esposito.

In the end, Miles is successful because he is backed up by the love of his family – both blood – Charlie – and ‘adopted’ – Nora and Jason. Neville is taken out by his own son in the rescue attempt. Neville’s cold approach hasn’t earned him the love, respect, or support he needs to win. Neville doesn’t seem to realize that his son turned on him because he didn’t trust or respect him. Jason tells his father that he hates him. Neville is abandoned on the boat, and Miles escapes with the support of his entire family: Charlie, Nora, and Jason, who has become a loyal brother-in-arms. Doctor Camp is only able to escape once he is reunited with his loving family.

It was nice to see Nora finally get to do something constructive in this episode, and it opens with her getting back to her special bomb-making talent. She points out that she only came with Miles because she thought he’d changed when he came to her to help on the quest to free his nephew, Danny. She also gets Miles to stop drinking at the end of the episode in favor of making love to her. Charlie thanks Miles for letting the Doctor go, and Miles thanks her. Both Nora and Charlie have shown Miles that family can be a support system and not just a weakness to be exploited by his enemies.

In another nice parallel between our characters, the show focuses on what creates loyalty. Flynn (Colm Feore) expresses concern that Monroe’s actions may have been a bit too extreme lately. He points out that they are trying to neutralize the threat and not create more radicals. Monroe immediately puts Flynn in his place by telling him he is easily replaceable, that he’s just his IT guy.

Meanwhile, Aaron (Zak Orth) and Rachel (Elizabeth Mitchell) are struggling to make it to the Tower. Orth and Mitchell also put in outstanding performances in tonight’s episode, and we finally get to see a major indication of why Aaron is so important to the entire plot. We also get to see how far Aaron has come from the timid man in the flashbacks to being able to defend Rachel and even take out one of their attackers. Most importantly, Aaron refuses to leave Rachel after she breaks her leg, even if it puts him in great danger. His loyalty to her is built on their shared history of support not fear or coercion.

The big reveal in this week’s episode is, of course, the fact that there is a clipping of Aaron, the brilliant MIT student, in Dr Warren’s “spell-book” on the Tower. Somehow Aaron holds the key to figuring out the Tower. Hopefully, this is how Aaron’s superior intelligence is going to come into play. We also get a glimpse of the Tower at the end of the episode when Grace (Maria Howell) finally gets the elevator working. As I suspected in a previous episode, the Tower’s elevator goes down – not up. An underground bunker like this never bodes well. Grace’s guard handcuffs her to her chair and decides to check out what is down on the 12th floor. Unfortunately, he doesn’t get past the 7th when something attacks him. We don’t see the inside of the elevator when it comes back up, but from the amount of blood, it’s clear that the guard didn’t survive the trip. I wonder if the nanites didn’t do it. I also wonder if the nanites can hold cancer at bay and were somehow keeping Danny alive, will Aaron be able to harness them in some way to keep Rachel alive? Because a compound fracture such as she sustained, where the bone is protruding should be incredibly susceptible to a major infection even under the best circumstances.

What did you think of this week’s episode? What part do you think Aaron will play in the Tower? How long do you think Miles will be able to hold the upper hand with Neville? Is Monroe’s increasing paranoia going to be his undoing? Let me know your thoughts in the comments below.Martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04680593163636654039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8936761927177970969.post-8548250516323141332013-05-02T00:05:00.000-03:002013-05-02T00:14:23.630-03:00Aaron's Journal: RIP Danny Matheson

A few months ago, when Charlie was first setting out to get Danny back, I stood in my house, hyperventilating, holding the damned pendant that Ben handed me before he died - and in that moment, if there was any way out for me, I would have taken it. I'd spent years after the Blackout in the wild, fighting just to eat. I'd lost everything to it, even Priscilla. And the truth was, I was scared of what was out there. I wish someone else could have taken the burden from me... but they couldn't. Because I owed Danny too much to stay behind, even if it meant ending up bloody in a ditch halfway to Philadelphia. His parents brought me in from the cold, but it was Danny and Charlie that showed me there was still something worth a damn in the world.

When I first met Danny, he was this scrawny, asthmatic kid who could barely keep up with his big sister. I couldn't help but see myself in him. And there weren't many people like me left. Danny and Charlie, they had something that nobody has anymore - innocence. Ben and Rachel shielded them from the worst of things. Let them be normal kids, most of the time. I'm not saying they didn't have to learn to field dress a deer when they should have been watching "Bambi," but to them, the world outside their cul-de-sac was still, somehow, a beautiful place. Because it was full of possibility and things they'd never seen or even heard of - these kids had no memories of movies, or planes, or even of riding in cars. To see the look on their faces whenever they saw some new artifact from before the Blackout, the sheer wonder... it let me see the world that way again, too.

One day, I left our village to scavenge for books. There was an abandoned city not too far away, and I hoped that somebody had spared Joe Hill from becoming firewood (or worse, toilet paper). On the way, I ran into a guy on the road. A guy who didn't seem like he had much of anything to lose. I could tell he'd been walking a long time, and had spent too much of it by himself. He pulled a knife and asked for everything I had on me, which wasn't much - and for him, wasn't enough. Just when he decided it'd be worth the small amount of trouble to cut my throat, there was this rustling in the forest. At that moment, I was praying for an angry raccoon - anything that'd distract him enough so I could try to run. But out came a 10-year-old Danny Matheson, blonde hair in his eyes, arrow notched, bow drawn. As intimidated as the squirrel he was out trying to hunt, but that didn't stop him from standing between me and the sociopath. The sight was just... insane. The guy could have broken Danny in half; he could have killed the both of us, but he didn't. He laughed... at the look on Danny's face, at the notion he might survive the better part of a decade after the Blackout only to be shot by a long-lost Hanson brother. I have to believe a little humanity was sparked in him by the loyalty Danny showed me. I know it was in me.

Today, I watched that boy get killed. And I don't know if I can ever think of the world as a beautiful place again.Martinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04680593163636654039noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8936761927177970969.post-88644519948314777222013-05-01T20:55:00.000-03:002013-05-01T20:57:17.111-03:00Revolution Burning Questions: Who Didn't Wear a Condom?

Revolution packed two major twists into Monday's episode — including the discovery that one of our favorites is a father! Read on to discover the proud papa's identity.
[Warning: Major spoilers ahead!]

Love stinks, part 1

Tired of waiting for Miles to surface on his own, Monroe hatches a scheme to bring his former bestie right to him: hold his ex-fiancé hostage! Sucks to have dated a Matheson, amiright? (Rachel, you know what I'm talking about!) Of course, Monroe isn't one to do anything halfway, so instead of just threatening Emma's life, he goes after their entire hometown. No one can ever say Monroe doesn't give 100%.

Family feud

Man, Charlie is really killing it recently. When Miles came in for a little uncle-niece bonding, my new favorite bada-- basically told him to cut the crap unless he wanted to own up to swapping spit with her mom. And thank god she did, because we need some answers around here! Unfortunately, Miles isn't exactly one to open up about his feelings, so we'll have to wait a bit longer to find out what that's all about. But at least Charlie is starting to become the voice of the audience she was always meant to be.

Love stinks, part 2

First, Aaron abandoned Priscilla in the woods while she slept and then he ran around like a chicken with its head cut off when he saw her in the market. Smooth moves, dude! No shocker that Priscilla moved on, but that doesn't make her treatment of Aaron any less excusable. Pretending as though they didn't date, let alone that they were married?! Way harsh, Tai!

Of course, it turns out Priscilla's sad dismissal of Aaron wasn't simply crocodile tears. Her "husband" Steve (if that is his real name) was holding her at gun point, forcing her to cut off the conversation. Sensing something's amiss, Aaron goes after her only to have So-Called Steve tell him Priscilla is a fugitive wanted by the Monroe Republic. Proving he isn't useless once again, Aaron rescues his wife and does the big tearful confession thing from every good rom-com. Priscilla forgives him, but also drops the bomb that she has a new family now, kids and all. Ouch, that's gotta hurt.

Can Monroe be saved?

This episode was a nice reminder that Monroe still has feelings underneath that hard (and freakishly tan) exterior. He loves his hometown, he loves his family, he loves Emma, he even still loves Miles — too bad the more Monroe seems to care about something, the more he'll do to destroy it. Emma did her best attempt at making Monroe's heart grow three sizes (and even got a super sexy kiss out of it), but it was too late. The plan was already in motion and there was no turning back. Though, I still believe there's hope of him finding redemption later.

Where's the line?

On second thought, as much as I love Monroe, using Emma as a human shield was pretty terrible. Props to Charlie for still wanting to shoot him (even if it meant Emma's death, as well). I know it might sound pretty terrible that I keep applauding Charlie for being murderous (especially when condemning Monroe in the same breath), but after her pouting this is a welcome change.

Always wear a condom

This was probably the biggest twist Revolution has done probably since — well, ever! Monroe has a son? And with Miles' former fiancé?! For reals?!? In fact, it turns out Bass and Emma got down and dirty in the same room that Miles lay sleeping. Sheesh! No wonder those two have so many issues.

Too bad one of the rebels shot down Emma to get Monroe before he could find out where their love child was hiding. But just the knowledge that their son was out there seemed to make Monroe so happy that he didn't care about his possibly fatal gut wound. (Personally, I think he might want to rethink his priorities).

Trading places

Though we've only known them as enemies, Neville and Miles started out as comrades, and it seems they'll be joining forces again! In the second big twist of the night, we find out that Neville's now working for the Georgia Federation and the President has decided to dispatch Monroe's former right-hand man to work with Miles on a new mission. For some reason, I doubt that'll go too well...

What do you think of Neville's new job? Are you surprised Monroe has a kid?

Revolution airs Mondays at 10/9c on NBC.
